Mill Yard Cold AshbyKevin Spires24 February 2025

Hi

My grandparents lived in Mill Yard according to 1939 record and its the first time I see my Mum appear on records on Ancestry, They were Arthur and Florence Rule. My mum was Dorothy Joyce Rule. In addition my Nan's parents also live in the village at 39 Church Lane. they are now in the graveyard plot 6 I have found out.

I just wonder if someone could send me a photo or something of Mill yard from about 1939 so I can picture where my mum grew up.

Many thanks in addvance

Am I right in thinking that our family friend, Dorothy Richardson, was head of the primary school in Cold Ashby in the 1940'S? Does anyone remember?
Tim Lill:25 September 2013
I attended Cold Ashby School at the age of 5 in 1946, but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the Head Teacher at that time, but Dorothy Richardson's name rings a bell for some reason. I left after a year and went to Thornby School, walking each day there and back from Cold Ashby.
Janet Thompson (nee Bott):18 February 2014
Yes, Miss Richardson was Teacher at Cold Ashby in the 40's We have a photo of her with her class at the school.

What celebrations took place in the village to commemorate the Coronation. I recall a damp day, with a Fancy Dress Competition in which I took part and came 3rd as Lester Piggott. The winner was a girl who sewed sweets all over her dress!! In the evening (best part of the day) a lot of us kids went up to Winnick Warren for a frolic or two. Philip Bott and Roger Miller were my pals.

Why has the RESTRICTION been constructed in the main street? Ihave travelled through the village for the last 25yrsapproximately twice amonth Ihave never found it dangerous in any way Ifeel it is a hazard now with thisconstruction Get rid of it please !
Graham Jones:28 March 2013
The chicane was constructed by Northampton County Council at the request of local residents who felt the speed of vehicles travelling up and down the road outside their houses was excessive and not being curbed by the signs. The signs for the system are not yet in place but will be shortly. The traffic engineers feel that vehicles approaching the restriction at legal speeds will be at no risk. The scheme has made life safer and quieter for local residents. 22,000 vehicles per week use the road. From clerk to the parish council.
John Hesk:30 March 2013
The traffic calming installation on West Haddon Road is the result of years of campaigning by Cold Ashby Parish Council and former Speedwatch volunteers.
As The Clerk to The Parish Council rightly states, it is designed to increase levels of safety for everyone living in, or passing through, our village - pedestrians and motorists alike.
Such chicanes are perfectly safe for drivers who are prepared to slow down to legal speeds and wait as necessary for other road users who have the right of way.
Those who are not prepared to modify their driving behaviour to negotiate this feature would be best advised to choose an alternative route.
May I take this opportunity to thank the Parish Council for their efforts on behalf of Cold Ashby's residents?

Hi everyone, could you tell me if there are any Howletts currently living in the village? Seems my family originate from Cold Ashby.
Visited on Saturday 22/03/14 and found two graves, both Thomas Howlett and their wives, one of which may be my great grandfather. Thanks, Paul Howlett.
Graham Jones:22 March 2014
Hello Paul

There are no Howletts on the electoral register I'm afraid. That doesn't mean there are no relations of yours here of course, just none called Howlett.
